Daniel Postgate biography

Daniel Postgate (1964–2025) was a children’s author, illustrator and cartoonist. He illustrated many children’s books, including The Hairy Toe, Smelly Bill and The Richest Crocodile in the World.

Postgate worked as a freelance author, illustrator and cartoonist for more than 20 years. His own titles included The Snagglegrollop, Smelly Bill, Kevin Saves the World and Big Mum Plum.

Smelly Bill is a picture book about a scruffy dog who loves unpleasant smells and tries to avoid being washed by Great Aunt Bleach. The book was released by NorthSouth on 1 April 2007 and has 32 pages.

Smelly Bill won the Nottingham Children’s Book Award and the Norfolk County Children’s Book Award. Postgate was also shortlisted for the Sheffield and Stockport Children’s Book Awards.

Postgate illustrated titles in the Murderous Maths series by Kjartan Poskitt, including The Mean and Vulgar Bits, published by Scholastic on 4 January 2010, and The Secrets of Sums, published by Scholastic on 1 August 2019.

Postgate wrote Clangers: The Brilliant Surprise, a 32-page picture book connected with the Clangers characters, published on 3 September 2015. In 2014, he worked with Peter Firmin on a new series of The Clangers, writing many episodes and voicing the Iron Chicken, the Soup Dragon and Baby Soup Dragon.
