Clare Helen Welsh biography

Clare Helen Welsh is a British children’s author who has written numerous picture books and early readers. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a primary school teacher. Her background in education has influenced her approach to storytelling, with a focus on themes that support children’s emotional wellbeing and development.

Welsh’s debut picture book, Animal Ice Cream, was published by Maverick Arts Publishing in 2016. Since then, she has authored a range of titles for young readers, including The Tide, illustrated by Ashling Lindsay and published by Little Tiger in 2019. The Tide addresses the topic of dementia in a sensitive and accessible way for children. Another notable work is How Selfish!, illustrated by Olivier Tallec and published by Little Tiger in 2019, which explores themes of sharing and friendship.

Welsh has collaborated with a variety of illustrators and publishers, including Nosy Crow, Andersen Press, and Macmillan Children’s Books. Her stories often explore family relationships, emotions, and resilience. She has also written for educational publishers, contributing to reading schemes and classroom resources.

In 2020, The Tide was shortlisted for the Teach Primary Book Awards, recognising its impact in the classroom and its sensitive handling of complex topics.
