Christina Rossetti was an English poet who wrote a range of works for both adults and children. She was born in London and became known for her lyric poetry, devotional verse, and children’s literature. Her most famous collection, Goblin Market and Other Poems, was published in 1862 by Macmillan. The title poem, “Goblin Market,” is widely studied and has been included in numerous anthologies.
Rossetti also published The Prince’s Progress and Other Poems in 1866 and Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book in 1872, the latter featuring illustrations by Arthur Hughes. Sing-Song is recognised for its contribution to Victorian children’s poetry. Her other works include A Pageant and Other Poems (1881) and Verses (1893).
In addition to poetry, Rossetti wrote prose works such as Commonplace and Other Short Stories (1870) and Speaking Likenesses (1874), a collection of stories for children. Her poetry often appeared in periodicals and anthologies during her lifetime.
Christina Rossetti’s work has been acknowledged for its influence on English literature. In 1893, she published Verses for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Her poem “In the Bleak Midwinter” was later set to music by Gustav Holst and Harold Darke, becoming a well-known Christmas carol.
