Cece Bell is an American author and illustrator known for her work in children’s literature. She is the creator of the graphic novel El Deafo, published by Amulet Books in 2014. El Deafo is a memoir based on Bell’s experiences growing up with hearing loss and using a Phonic Ear hearing aid. The book received the 2015 Newbery Honor and the 2014 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids (ages 8–12).
Bell has written and illustrated several other books, including the Rabbit & Robot series, which began with Rabbit & Robot: The Sleepover (2012), a Geisel Honor Book. She also created the Sock Monkey series, starting with Sock Monkey Goes to Hollywood (2003). Her picture books include I Yam a Donkey! (2015) and Bee-Wigged (2008).
Bell’s work has been published by major publishers such as Candlewick Press, Amulet Books, and Clarion Books. She has received recognition from the American Library Association and the Eisner Awards. In 2017, she published Rabbit & Robot and Ribbit, the second book in the Rabbit & Robot series.
El Deafo was adapted into an animated miniseries released by Apple TV+ in 2022.
