Caroline Lawrence is a British-American author known for her historical fiction series for children. She was born in London and raised in California. Lawrence studied Classical Archaeology at Newnham College, Cambridge, and later pursued a degree in Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College London.
Her most notable work is The Roman Mysteries series, which began with the publication of The Thieves of Ostia in 2001. The series, set in ancient Rome, follows the adventures of four children and spans 17 books, concluding with The Man from Pomegranate Street in 2009. The series was adapted into a television show by the BBC in 2007.
Lawrence has also written The P.K. Pinkerton Mysteries, a series set in the American Wild West, starting with The Case of the Deadly Desperados in 2011. Additionally, she authored The Roman Quests, a spin-off series from The Roman Mysteries, beginning with Escape from Rome in 2016.
Her work has been recognised with several awards, including the Classical Association Prize in 2009. Lawrence’s books have been translated into multiple languages, reaching a wide international audience. Her contribution to children’s literature is marked by her ability to weave historical detail with engaging storytelling.
