Bethan Welby biography

Bethan Welby is a British author and illustrator of children’s books. She studied at the Cambridge School of Art, where she completed the MA in Children’s Book Illustration. Welby’s debut picture book, Little Red, was published by Scallywag Press in 2020. The book was shortlisted for the Klaus Flugge Prize in 2021, which recognises promising new illustrators of picture books published in the UK.

Welby has also written and illustrated Bear and the Piano: The Sketchbook and The After Christmas Tree, both published by Scallywag Press. Her work has been noted for its detailed illustration and sensitive storytelling. In addition to her own titles, Welby has contributed illustrations to other projects and anthologies.

Her book The After Christmas Tree was published in 2022. Welby’s illustrations have been exhibited as part of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and the AOI World Illustration Awards. She continues to produce picture books for young readers, with her work recognised by the Klaus Flugge Prize shortlist in 2021.
