Avalon Nuovo biography

Avalon Nuovo is an American illustrator and occasional animator originally from Los Angeles. She earned a BFA in illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and studied further at Konstfack University in Stockholm. She has lived and worked in London and Cambridge before settling in Amsterdam.

Nuovo’s editorial clients include The New York Times, Snapchat, Apple, The Washington Post, Bloomberg Businessweek, NPR, VICE and BBC, among others. Her illustration style is noted for its bold use of colour, dramatic geometry and atmospheric lighting.

In publishing, she has collaborated with Flying Eye Books on picture books such as Orchestra (2019), and with Iris Volant on the non-fiction titles Ancient Games, Ancient Wonders and Ocean. Orchestra, illustrated with David Doran, was chosen for the 2022 Texas Topaz Nonfiction Reading List and received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal.

Nuovo’s first-hand creative approach relies on extensive sketchbook work and visual research. She draws inspiration from music, mythology and the human form, and explores the interplay of light and shape to evoke mood.

She is represented by Jacky Winter, and remains active across editorial, advertising, packaging and publishing projects, working from her Amsterdam studio.
