Armin Greder is a Swiss-born author and illustrator, known for his impactful work in children’s literature. He emigrated to Australia in 1970, where he initially worked as a graphic designer before transitioning to teaching and illustrating. Greder’s illustrations are often characterised by their bold and expressive style, which complements the serious themes of his books.
One of his most notable works is The Island, published in 2007, which addresses themes of xenophobia and isolation. This book has been widely acclaimed for its powerful narrative and striking illustrations. Another significant work is The City, published in 2010, which explores themes of urban life and alienation.
Greder has collaborated with several authors, including Libby Gleeson, with whom he created the award-winning book The Great Bear. This book won the Bologna Ragazzi Award in 2000, a prestigious international prize recognising excellence in children’s book publishing.
His work has been recognised with numerous awards, including the Children’s Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year Award for Fox, a collaboration with Margaret Wild, published in 2000. Greder’s books often tackle complex social issues, making them a subject of study and discussion in educational settings.
