Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Anthony Edward Tudor Browne is a British writer and illustrator of children’s picture books, born in Sheffield in September 1946. He studied graphic design at Leeds College of Art, graduating in 1967, then worked as a medical illustrator before producing greeting cards and launching his career as an author‑illustrator in 1976.
His debut book, Through the Magic Mirror, was followed by a succession of titles leading to international recognition. Gorilla (1983) won the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Kurt Maschler Award. He earned a second Greenaway Medal in 1992 for Zoo. Additional Kurt Maschler Awards came for his editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1988) and Voices in the Park (1998).
In 2000 he became the first British illustrator to receive the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the highest international honour for children’s book illustrators. From 2009 to 2011 he served as the UK Children’s Laureate, promoting visual literacy through initiatives such as “The Shape Game” project at Tate Britain.
His published work exceeds fifty titles, translated into 26 languages and exhibited worldwide. In the 2021 New Year Honours, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to literature.
