Andrea Wang is a Chinese American author known for her children’s books that often explore themes of culture, identity, and family. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing for Young People from Lesley University and a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of Michigan.
Wang’s debut picture book, The Nian Monster, was published in 2016 by Albert Whitman & Company. The book was inspired by Chinese folklore and received positive reviews for its engaging storytelling and cultural representation.
In 2019, Wang published Magic Ramen: The Story of Momofuku Ando, which tells the story of the inventor of instant ramen. This book was published by Little Bee Books and was praised for its informative narrative and vibrant illustrations.
Her 2021 picture book, Watercress, illustrated by Jason Chin, received critical acclaim. It was published by Neal Porter Books and won the 2022 Caldecott Medal, the 2022 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature, and a Newbery Honor. The book is noted for its poignant exploration of family history and cultural heritage.
