Adam Kay is a British author and former doctor, known for his bestselling memoir This Is Going to Hurt. Born in Brighton, he studied medicine at Imperial College London and worked as a junior doctor for several years. His transition from medicine to writing was marked by his debut book, which provides a candid and humorous account of his experiences in the NHS.
This Is Going to Hurt was published in 2017 and quickly became a bestseller, receiving critical acclaim for its insightful and often comedic portrayal of life as a junior doctor. The book won several awards, including the National Book Awards Book of the Year in 2018. It has been translated into multiple languages and adapted into a television series.
Following the success of his debut, Kay published Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas in 2019, a festive-themed collection of stories from his time in the NHS. In 2020, he released Dear NHS: 100 Stories to Say Thank You, a compilation of personal stories from various contributors, with proceeds supporting NHS charities.
Kay has also ventured into children’s literature with the publication of Kay’s Anatomy in 2020, an educational book aimed at young readers, explaining the workings of the human body with humour and clarity. This was followed by Kay’s Marvellous Medicine in 2021, which explores medical history and bizarre treatments from the past.
In addition to his writing, Adam Kay is a successful comedian and screenwriter. He has performed at numerous comedy festivals and appeared on various television and radio programmes. His work continues to resonate with audiences, offering a unique blend of humour and insight into the medical profession.
