Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK

Please browse our regularly updated collections of suggested reading books for learners in Key Stage Two (KS2) in UK primary schools. We have compiled lists of the best chapter books for 7-year-olds, 8-year-olds, 9-year-olds, 10-year-olds olds and 11-year-olds in Years 3-6.
With mystery books, adventure stories, myths and legends, biographies, graphic novels, funny stories and fantasy reading, there should be a genre for everyone. We’ve also tried to ensure each collection of books includes titles for class reading, group reading, reading aloud, reading at home or for home learning, interventions, paired / buddy/sibling reading, independent choice and reading for pleasure.
These KS2 booklists (Years 3-6) are designed for UK primary classrooms and families who want dependable reading choices, shaped by our curation panel of experienced teachers and school librarians. We include a balance of accessible reads, stronger challenges, and a range of formats to support reading for pleasure across ages 7-11. For younger pupils, browse our KS1 and EYFS reading lists.
If you are building a KS2 class library or picking home reading for younger juniors, start with Year 3 and Year 4. These lists include a mix of formats and difficulty, so you can match reading choices to confidence and stamina as well as interest.
Year 5 and Year 6 readers often want longer stories, richer plots and a wider range of themes. These lists include accessible reads as well as stronger challenges, with choices that work for independent reading and whole-class use.
Graphic novels can be a strong choice in KS2, especially where pupils need a clear narrative drive and manageable chunks of text. They also support book talk and re-reading, which helps build fluency and confidence.
Poetry collections and anthologies work well in KS2 classrooms for short shared reads, performance, vocabulary and discussion. They also make it easier to fit reading into busy weeks without losing variety.
