Our review:
Where the Tide Lines Lead is a blend of contemporary Young Adult drama and supernatural mystery, set against the sun-soaked backdrop of a Spanish holiday island. Told from the perspective of seventeen-year-old Elio, the story opens with what should be his last carefree summer before being shipped off to boarding school in Switzerland, except the island isn’t the idyllic escape it used to be. Teenagers have been disappearing without explanation, tourist numbers have collapsed, and Elio’s own family’s resort has laid off staff, including the parents of his closest friends. Alongside the mystery, Elio also faces pressure from classmates angry that the resort talks about protecting the island’s environment without doing much about it, adding another layer of tension to his summer.
The mystery builds steadily, from unsettling early signs, a friendship with Carlos fraying and a classmate walking into the sea at night, seen only by Elio, to full supernatural territory once Elio teams up with Sam, an English tourist whose twin sister is among the missing. Together, they’re pulled into the water themselves and discover an underwater city ruled by selkie-like beings, who need Elio and Sam’s help for reasons that aren’t immediately clear. But something doesn’t feel right, and Elio and Sam begin to question the beings’ credibility, the constant need to eat pulmonaria and why the mysterious Scha can speak English. The underwater mystery resolves in a way that pulls together the summer’s loose threads, giving Elio’s story a satisfying close that avoids the obvious.
Our verdict:
Where the Tide Lines Lead works because it never loses sight of the human story beneath the mystery. Elio’s summer isn’t just about missing teenagers – it’s about losing friendships, losing certainty, and figuring out who he wants to be. That makes the selkie mythology feel like it belongs, rather than just being there for effect. Cameron also weaves in real concerns about privilege, class, and the environment, giving the book more to think about than a typical supernatural thriller. It’s a great summer read for anyone who loves atmosphere and folklore, but there’s real substance here too, if you’re looking for it.
