Our review:

As in the three previous books, this contains a number of stories, all linked by the three main protagonists’ obsession with poo!

My Amazing Reindeer Poo Company
Christmas is coming and Pedro’s dad has just bought himself a 3D printer. Always looking for a way to make money, Pedro, along with friends Olga and Ozzy (otherwise known as the Poopies), decide to make plastic reindeer poo to sell at school. It’s a great plan until the profits disappear!

My Unbelievable Christmas Eve
Fast asleep on Christmas Eve, Pedro is surprised to be woken by the arrival of Father Christmas, except this one is soaking wet, dressed in orange, and called Rubbish Santa! Having explained why he looks as he does and handed over Pedro’s gift, he has to use the facilities and disappears!

My World Famous Super-ginormous Xmas Log Tradition
Christmas is over, it’s still the big day, but everything’s been opened or eaten, and there’s nothing left except watching the telly. When Gran’s boyfriend, Olga and Ozzy turn up, along with the real Santa, Christmas takes another strange turn, but Pedro is cool: he’s got his brilliant Christmas present, his gran is happy, and he still has some 3D reindeer poo for his mum!

Any fan of Christmas and/or toilet humour will laugh out loud at Pedro, Olga and Ozzy’s escapades. The artwork is familiar now, as is the humour, and fans of the three previous books should definitely enjoy this festive offering.

Our verdict:

Jim Smith has once again tapped into the type of humour youngsters in the suggested age range will immediately love. There is an actual storyline in each part, which is still apparent even with the abundance of poo jokes and mentions.

Most children will recognise the Christmas traditions and safety found in familiar activities contained here, while the addition of plenty of lavatorial humour and the simpler graphic novel format will mean this is a book which can be accessed by even the most reluctant reader in this age range, while still being enjoyed by more competent and confident readers.

Teaching points and book club discussion ideas:

  • What did you think of the author setting this book at Christmas? Was it more fun because of this?
  • The three stories run on from each other. Did this make you want to keep going or did it give you a natural break to pause your reading?
  • Pedro is a kind boy. What does he do in the story to help others that surprised you?
  •  In a cross-curricular activity with art, draw your own poster to advertise the reindeer poo sale. Were you surprised when one of Pedro’s schemes actually worked?
  • How do you feel about the fact that almost all of the adult drawings have no eyes?
  • How easy or difficult would it be to have to continue the same style of a graphic novel into the fourth book?
  • If you were writing book five, what would you call it?
