Our review:

Felix Green didn’t want to be different, but unfortunately, that’s what’s happened. He’s recently discovered he can predict the future and talk to ghosts, but it’s definitely not won him any friends! When he’s invited to join a very special agency in London, he finds out he’s not the only one who can see into the future. In fact, in his new school, he’d stand out more if he didn’t have premonitions!

Felix has a lot of anger inside, which isn’t good when you’re trying to learn about your new abilities! Luckily, he’s not alone. For the first time, he’s made friends, has teachers who actually listen to him, and can talk to most of the other students at the Future Agency about anything that confuses him, which is quite a lot!

Not everything is perfect, however, and Felix’s premonitions begin to show a worrying future where his friends are in danger along with the whole magic realm. Determined to do all he can, Felix begins his own investigation into what’s going on, but even his darkest nightmare couldn’t prepare him for what actually happens.

Our verdict:

Felix and the Future Agency is an exciting read with great main protagonists and excellent world-building. The use of an isolated part of the underground, which may or may not exist in real life, helps set the scene for young readers. At the same time, the introduction of famous landmarks or items of legend gives the paranormal side of the story realism and familiarity, which makes everything fit together really well.

There are questions asked here that will resonate with younger readers and, with bullies, friendly, if slightly disruptive, students, and those who are determined to see Felix fail, there will be characters readers of all ages will be familiar with. There are also cliffhangers and storylines that remain unfinished, but as Felix has four more years of school, they will probably get sorted by the end!

Overall, Felix and the Future Agency is exciting, well-written, and has characters to love and loathe. There is a big twist at the end of the story, which I have no doubt will be brought up again in book two, which will be released in October.

Teaching points and book club discussion ideas:

  • Felix didn’t like school until he found something he was good at. What subject would you like to put on the curriculum that you know you’d really enjoy?
  • The students who had identified their celestaur were very attached to them. What creature would you choose for your companion?
  • In a cross-curricular activity with art, design your four-poster bed. What would it look like? What special features would it have?
  • By the end of the book, Felix’s gran knows the truth about his new school. How hard do you think it would be to keep such a big secret?
  • There were surprises all through this book. What was your favourite one? Which character’s storyline surprised you the most
