Our review:

Astrosaurs have been a favourite with children since 2005. Originally written as chapter books, Mission to Infinity (three stories in one book) is their first venture into the increasingly popular world of graphic novels, bringing these already-popular characters into full colour.

For those unfamiliar with the Astrosaurs backstory, the premise is that dinosaurs were not unintelligent creatures wiped out by a meteorite. Instead, it was the dinosaurs who discovered space travel, leaving Earth before the meteorite hit. The dinosaurs colonised the Jurassic Quadrant, with the plant-eaters in the Vegetarian Section, the meat-eaters in the Carnivore Section, and a neutral Vegmeat Zone.

However, sometimes the meat-eaters invade the Vegetarian Section, threatening cosmic peace. And so, the Dinosaur Space Service was created, travelling on their spaceship, the DSS Sauropod, and led by Admiral Rosso. These are not just dinosaurs… these are Astrosaurs.

The book is divided into three missions, each with a different location. In Mission One, the Astrosaurs are transporting herbivore athletes to the Great Dinosaur Games on Planet Olympus when they are ambushed by raptors who kidnap the head-butters. Cue some epic dino-fights, T-Rex attacks, and a race against time to stop the bombs that have been planted in dinosaur skulls.

Mission Two involves egg-stealing oviraptors and a trip to Platus Two, a paradise which is not all that it seems and brings a few surprises. The Plateosaurs must fight for their dreams and the future of their race.

Mission Three takes the Astrosaurs into the deep sea, where they must find a deadly destroyer, solving the mystery of the attacks on the plankton factories to avoid an eco-disaster and famine. In the end, they can only do this by the sea creatures putting aside their differences and finding common ground.

The vocabulary in Mission to Infinity will certainly stretch young readers, with some tricky dinosaur names to challenge pronunciation skills.

The storylines are fast-paced, chaotic and complex, marrying perfectly with Alex Lopez’s bold illustrations, which really bring the characters to life with expression and give an immersive quality. They work especially well in the action scenes and fights. The stories are infused with light-hearted and irreverent humour, with some dung jokes which are sure to appeal to children.

The Astrosaurs are perfect for graphic novels, and this new style is guaranteed to appeal to old fans, attract new ones, and also encourage some reluctant readers to join them on their adventures.

Our verdict:

A new incarnation of this much-loved series that tells the epic adventures of the Astrosaurs in graphic novel form. With illustrations that encapsulate the charm, chaos and irreverence of the characters, Mission to Infinity is sure to appeal to even the most reluctant readers.
