Yana Toboso is a Japanese manga artist, born in 1984 in Warabi, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. She is best known as the creator of Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji), a series set in Victorian England that follows young aristocrat Ciel Phantomhive and his demon butler, Sebastian Michaelis.
Toboso’s early work includes the one-volume manga Rust Blaster, published in 2006. Later that year, she launched Black Butler in Square Enix’s Monthly GFantasy magazine. The series quickly became a commercial success and has been adapted into multiple anime series, original video animations, stage musicals, and a live-action film.
She has also contributed character design work to other projects, including Square Enix’s video game Disney Twisted-Wonderland (2020). Black Butler has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, establishing Toboso as one of the most successful contemporary shōnen manga creators.
