William Pène du Bois was an American author and illustrator known for his contributions to children’s literature. He was born in Nutley, New Jersey, and studied art in France. Pène du Bois began his career as an illustrator before turning to writing and illustrating his own books.
He is best known for his book The Twenty-One Balloons, which was published in 1947. This novel, which he both wrote and illustrated, received the Newbery Medal in 1948. Pène du Bois also illustrated books by other authors, including works by Jules Verne and Isaac Bashevis Singer.
In addition to his work as an author and illustrator, Pène du Bois was a founding editor of the magazine Parade. Over his career, he wrote and illustrated numerous books for children, often blending imaginative stories with detailed illustrations.
William Pène du Bois received the Newbery Medal in 1948 for The Twenty-One Balloons.
