Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
William Grill is a British author and illustrator known for his work in children’s literature. He studied Illustration at University College Falmouth. Grill’s debut book, Shackleton’s Journey, was published by Flying Eye Books in 2014. The book recounts Ernest Shackleton’s 1914–1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition and features detailed coloured pencil illustrations.
Shackleton’s Journey received the 2015 Kate Greenaway Medal, awarded by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals for distinguished illustration in a book for children. The book was also shortlisted for the 2014 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the 2014 AOI World Illustration Awards.
Grill’s second book, The Wolves of Currumpaw, was published in 2016. It is based on the true story of Lobo, a wolf in the American West, and is inspired by Ernest Thompson Seton’s 1898 account. The book was shortlisted for the 2017 Kate Greenaway Medal.
In 2020, Grill published Bandoola: The Great Elephant Rescue, which tells the story of elephants and their role in the forests of Myanmar during the Second World War. The book was longlisted for the 2022 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal.
William Grill’s books have been translated into multiple languages and are published by Flying Eye Books.
