William Faulkner (1897–1962) was an American novelist and short story writer. He was born on 25 September 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi, and later moved with his family to Oxford, Mississippi, which became central to his life and work.
Faulkner is renowned for his novels set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, inspired by Lafayette County, Mississippi. His works explore the history, culture, and social issues of the American South. Major novels include The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930), Light in August (1932), and Absalom, Absalom! (1936).
In addition to novels, Faulkner published poetry, screenplays, and short stories, including “A Rose for Emily” (1930). He also worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s.
He received the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature for “his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel.” He also won two Pulitzer Prizes for Fiction, for A Fable (1954) and The Reivers (1962).
William Faulkner died on 6 July 1962 in Byhalia, Mississippi. His work remains a defining contribution to twentieth-century literature.
