Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Vyara Boyadjieva is a Bulgarian illustrator and picture book creator. She completed her first degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna in 2017, followed by a Master’s in Children’s Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art in 2020.
She was runner-up in the 2020 Victoria & Albert Museum Illustration Awards for Student Illustrator of the Year.
Her published works include Word Trouble (Walker Books, 2023), which she both wrote and illustrated; illustrator roles on A Day That’s Ours by Blake Nuto (Flying Eye Books, 2022); and Misé Misé, written by Camille Lavoix (La Joie de Lire, 2022).
Another of her author-illustrated works is My Sofia and Other Folks (Tochitza Publishing, 2024), a book combining illustrations and direct quotes from residents of Sofia to capture everyday life in the city.
In 2024, My Sofia and Other Folks was nominated for the Bulgarian “Hristo G. Danov” award in the category “The Art of Book Making”.
