V. V. Ganeshananthan (born 1980) is an American writer, essayist and journalist of Sri Lankan Tamil descent. She graduated from Harvard College in 2002, the University of Iowa with an MFA in 2005, and from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism with an MA in 2007.
Her debut novel, Love Marriage, was published in 2008. Set partly in Sri Lanka and partly among its diaspora in North America, it was long-listed for the Orange Prize, chosen as a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, and named one of The Washington Post’s Best Books of 2008.
Her second novel, Brotherless Night, published in January 2023, follows a sixteen-year-old girl named Sashikala during the early years of the Sri Lankan Civil War.
For Brotherless Night, she won the 2024 Women’s Prize for Fiction and the 2024 Carol Shields Prize for Fiction.
