Thomas Stearns Eliot, known as T. S. Eliot, was an Anglo-American poet, essayist, publisher, playwright, and literary critic. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and later became a British citizen. Eliot is widely recognised for his contributions to modernist poetry and literature.
Eliot’s works for children include Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, first published by Faber and Faber in 1939. This collection of whimsical poems about feline characters was originally written for his godchildren and friends. The book has remained in print since its publication and inspired the musical Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
In addition to his children’s literature, Eliot’s major works include The Waste Land (1922), The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock (1915), Four Quartets (1943), and the play Murder in the Cathedral (1935). He was a director at the publishing house Faber and Faber, where he played a significant role in publishing and promoting contemporary writers.
Eliot received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 for his outstanding, pioneering contribution to present-day poetry. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats remains his most notable work for children and continues to be published by Faber and Faber.
