Truly Johnston biography

Truly Johnston is a British children’s author and poet. Born in London and of mixed Sri Lankan and English heritage, she studied English Literature at the University of Cambridge before working in the charity and public sectors. Her early development as a writer included participation in the WriteMentor programme in 2021 and selection for the Penguin WriteNow programme in 2022. That same trajectory led to success in competition: in 2022 she won the Bath Children’s Novel Award with her manuscript Corrine and the Democonch.

Johnston’s debut novel, The Shell Keepers, was published by Chicken House on 5 June 2025 (ISBN 9781915947734). A middle-grade title, it showcases her interest in imaginative storytelling for young readers. In addition to fiction, Johnston writes poetry and has contributed children’s book recommendations and features for wider audiences.

Her professional background, formal study of literature and recognition through mentoring schemes and awards mark Johnston as a writer whose work is grounded in craft and supported by established publishing channels.
