Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Tom Avery is a British author known for his children’s books. He has worked as a teacher and draws on his experiences in education to inform his writing. Avery’s debut novel, Too Much Trouble, was published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books in 2011. The book tells the story of two brothers navigating life in a new country and was shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award in 2012.
His subsequent works include My Brother’s Shadow (2014) and Not As We Know It (2015), both published by Andersen Press. These novels explore themes such as family, loss, and friendship, and are aimed at middle-grade readers. Avery’s writing is noted for its focus on emotional resilience and the challenges faced by young people.
In 2017, Avery published Aftershocks with Barrington Stoke, a publisher specialising in books for reluctant and dyslexic readers. This title continues his exploration of complex emotional themes in accessible language.
