Thomas Middleton was an English playwright and poet active during the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean periods. He is recognised as one of the most prolific and versatile dramatists of his era. Middleton was born in London and studied at Queen’s College, Oxford, though he did not complete a degree.
Middleton’s early career included the publication of poetry and prose pamphlets, but he is best known for his work in the theatre. He wrote for several London theatre companies, including the Admiral’s Men and the King’s Men. Middleton collaborated with other playwrights such as Thomas Dekker, John Webster, and William Rowley. His plays span a range of genres, including city comedies, tragedies, and tragicomedies.
Among Middleton’s most notable works are the city comedy A Chaste Maid in Cheapside and the tragedy The Revenger’s Tragedy, the latter of which is now generally attributed to him, though it was originally published anonymously. He also co-wrote The Changeling with William Rowley, a play that remains widely studied and performed. Middleton’s satirical and often darkly comic style is evident in works such as Women Beware Women and The Roaring Girl, the latter co-authored with Dekker.
In addition to his original plays, Middleton contributed to the revision of other dramatists’ works and was appointed as the City Chronologer for London in 1620, a post involving the composition of civic entertainments and pageants. His writing often reflects the social and political tensions of early seventeenth-century London.
Thomas Middleton’s influence on English drama has been recognised in modern scholarship, and his works are included in major collections of Renaissance drama. A significant milestone in the study of his oeuvre was the publication of Thomas Middleton: The Collected Works by Oxford University Press in 2007.
