Theodore Dreiser was an American novelist and journalist, recognised for his contributions to naturalist literature. He was born in Indiana and attended Indiana University for a short period before beginning a career in journalism. Dreiser worked as a reporter and editor for several newspapers and magazines, which influenced his later writing style and subject matter.
Dreiser’s first novel, Sister Carrie, was published in 1900. The book, which tells the story of a young woman who moves to Chicago and faces the challenges of urban life, is considered a significant work in American literature. Although its initial publication was met with controversy due to its themes, Sister Carrie later gained recognition for its realistic portrayal of social issues.
Following Sister Carrie, Dreiser wrote several other novels, including Jennie Gerhardt (1911), The Financier (1912), and The Titan (1914). His most acclaimed work, An American Tragedy, was published in 1925. This novel explores themes of ambition, class, and the American justice system, and is based on a real-life criminal case.
In addition to his novels, Dreiser wrote short stories, essays, and works of non-fiction. He was also involved in social and political causes, advocating for social reform and expressing his views through his writing and public activities.
Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy was published in 1925 and is widely regarded as a landmark in American literature.
