Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Susin Nielsen is a Canadian author and screenwriter known for her work in children’s and young adult literature. She began her writing career with the television series Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High, contributing scripts and novels related to the franchise.
Nielsen’s debut novel, Word Nerd, was published in 2008 by Tundra Books. Her subsequent works include Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom (2010), The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen (2012), We Are All Made of Molecules (2015), Optimists Die First (2017), and No Fixed Address (2018). Her books often address complex themes relevant to young readers.
The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen won the 2012 Governor General’s Award for English-language children’s literature. We Are All Made of Molecules was shortlisted for the 2015 Carnegie Medal and the 2016 UKLA Book Award. No Fixed Address was shortlisted for the 2019 Carnegie Medal.
Nielsen’s novels have been published internationally and translated into multiple languages. She continues to write for young readers, with her most recent novel, Tremendous Things, published in 2021.
