Dr Sharon Wismer is a marine ecologist and children’s non-fiction author whose work translates contemporary science for young readers. Her research has focused on the behavioural ecology of reef fishes and the effects of mass coral-bleaching events on coral reef ecosystems. Alongside academic posts, she has led science-communication initiatives and co-founded the SEA Kids Alliance to engage families with ocean science.
Wismer’s debut picture book, Keepers of the Reef (Tilbury House, 5 April 2022; illustrated by Alice Wong), introduces how herbivorous fishes help corals survive by controlling algae on reefs. The book pairs narrative scenes with back matter that supports classroom discussion of food webs, ecosystem services and conservation.
Her illustrated non-fiction title Wildlife in the Balance: The Species that Shape Earth’s Ecosystems (Flying Eye Books, 6 August 2024; illustrated by Terri Po) explains keystone species and trophic cascades across biomes. It has been used in upper-primary settings to build understanding of habitats, interdependence and environmental change.
Beyond authorship, Wismer contributes to outreach and evaluation on large science projects and speaks about making current research accessible to children. She completed her PhD in 2017 and has worked with universities and conservation partners on reef ecology and education.
Selected works: Keepers of the Reef (Tilbury House, 2022); Wildlife in the Balance: The Species that Shape Earth’s Ecosystems (Flying Eye Books, 2024).
Most recent dated milestone: Wildlife in the Balance shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize (Children’s Non-Fiction), August 2025.
