Sebastian Faulks is a British novelist, journalist, and broadcaster known for his historical and literary fiction. He was educated at Wellington College and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he read English. After university, Faulks worked as a journalist, holding positions at The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times, and as literary editor of The Independent.
Faulks published his first novel, A Trick of the Light, in 1984. He gained wider recognition with The Girl at the Lion d’Or (1989), the first in a loose trilogy set in France, followed by Birdsong (1993) and Charlotte Gray (1998). Birdsong, set before and during the First World War, is frequently studied in schools and has been adapted for stage and television.
His other novels include On Green Dolphin Street (2001), Human Traces (2005), Engleby (2007), and A Week in December (2009). Faulks was also chosen to write a James Bond novel, Devil May Care, published in 2008 to mark the centenary of Ian Fleming’s birth.
Faulks has written non-fiction, including The Fatal Englishman: Three Short Lives (1996), and has contributed to radio and television, notably presenting the BBC Radio 4 series Faulks on Fiction in 2011. He has received several literary honours, including being appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2002 for services to literature.
In 2023, Faulks published the novel The Seventh Son.
