Sam Selvon was a Trinidadian writer known for his contributions to literature exploring the experiences of West Indian migrants. He was born in San Fernando, Trinidad. Selvon attended Naparima College before working as a wireless operator with the Royal Navy during the Second World War. After the war, he worked as a journalist for the Trinidad Guardian.
In 1950, Selvon moved to London, where he became part of a community of Caribbean writers. His first novel, A Brighter Sun, was published in 1952 by Wingate. The novel is set in Trinidad and examines the lives of Indo-Trinidadian and Afro-Trinidadian communities. Selvon continued to write novels, short stories, and radio plays, often focusing on the experiences of Caribbean migrants in Britain.
One of his most recognised works is The Lonely Londoners, published in 1956 by Allan Wingate. The novel depicts the lives of West Indian immigrants in London during the 1950s, using a distinctive narrative style that incorporates Caribbean dialect. Selvon’s other works include Ways of Sunlight (1957), a collection of short stories, and Moses Ascending (1975), which continues the story of characters from The Lonely Londoners.
Selvon’s writing has been noted for its innovative use of language and its portrayal of migration and identity. In 1985, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Warwick.
