Ryoko Kui biography

Ryoko Kui is a Japanese manga artist best known for creating the fantasy series Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi). Her work is characterised by its blend of adventure, humour, and detailed world-building, often incorporating elements of food and cooking within fantastical settings.

Kui began her professional manga career with the short story Ryuu no Gakkou wa Yama no Ue, which was published in 2011. She subsequently released a collection of short stories, further establishing her reputation for inventive storytelling and unique characterisation.

Her most prominent work, Delicious in Dungeon, started serialization in 2014 in the magazine Harta, published by Enterbrain. The series follows a group of adventurers who explore dungeons and survive by cooking and eating the monsters they encounter. The manga has been noted for its detailed illustrations of both fantasy creatures and culinary techniques, as well as its exploration of group dynamics and survival.

Delicious in Dungeon has been published in English by Yen Press. The series has received critical recognition, including a nomination for the Manga Taishō award in 2016. In 2024, an anime adaptation of Delicious in Dungeon was released, further increasing the series’ international profile.

Ryoko Kui’s work continues to be influential in the manga community, with Delicious in Dungeon concluding its run in 2023.
