Richard Wright was an American author known for his works addressing racial themes, particularly in the context of African American experiences in the United States. He was born in 1908. Wright’s first published book was Uncle Tom’s Children (1938), a collection of novellas. His novel Native Son was published in 1940 by Harper & Brothers and became a bestseller, later adapted for stage and film. In 1945, Wright published his autobiography, Black Boy, which detailed his childhood and youth in the South.
Wright also wrote The Outsider (1953) and Black Power (1954), among other works. His writing has been recognised for its impact on American literature and its exploration of social and racial issues. Native Son was selected by the Book-of-the-Month Club and remains a significant work in twentieth-century literature. Wright died in 1960.
