Summer Reading Challenge
Summer reading challenge – A good reading challenge will not only promote reading and encourage reading for pleasure, but it will encourage a reading culture to spread like a virus throughout your school.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Richard Johnson is a British illustrator and author whose work blends strong design with atmospheric storytelling for readers of all ages. After establishing his career across editorial, design and advertising, he became widely known in children’s publishing for evocative, narrative-led artwork.
Johnson wrote and illustrated My Grandpa’s Amazing Inventions for Templar Publishing, and created the wordless picture book Once Upon a Snowstorm for Faber & Faber, a winter tale of separation and reunion told entirely through images.
He has collaborated with leading writers, including Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho on Our Tower (Frances Lincoln Children’s Books) and with Carnegie Medal winner Katya Balen on the dyslexia-friendly novella Little House (Barrington Stoke).
Awards and recognition include shortlistings and features in national showcases of illustration, and commissions for major media and cultural clients alongside his books. Our Tower was nominated for the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration in 2023.
