Richard Curtis biography

Richard Curtis is a British screenwriter, producer, and director, known for his work in film and television. He was born in New Zealand and raised in the United Kingdom. Curtis attended Harrow School and later Christ Church, Oxford, where he met several future collaborators.

He began his career in comedy, co-writing the television series Not the Nine O’Clock News and Blackadder with Rowan Atkinson and Ben Elton. Curtis is also known for his work on the sitcom Mr. Bean. In addition to television, he has written and directed several successful films, including Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Notting Hill (1999), Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001, co-writer), Love Actually (2003), and About Time (2013).

Alongside his film and television work, Curtis is a co-founder of Comic Relief, a major UK charity initiative launched in 1985 with comedian Lenny Henry. Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day has become a significant fundraising event in the UK, supporting projects in the UK and internationally.

Richard Curtis has received several awards and honours for his contributions to film, television, and charity, including being appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2008. In 2019, he was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship for his outstanding and exceptional contribution to film and television.
