Peter Whelan was a British playwright known for his work in theatre, particularly with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). He was born in 1931 and studied at the University of Staffordshire. Whelan began his career as a writer in the 1970s, initially focusing on radio plays before moving into stage drama.
Whelan’s plays often explore historical themes and events, with a particular interest in British history. One of his most notable works is The Accrington Pals, first performed by the RSC in 1981. The play examines the experiences of a group of soldiers from Accrington during the First World War and their families at home. This work established Whelan’s reputation for blending historical research with dramatic storytelling.
Other significant plays by Whelan include The Herbal Bed (1996), which is based on a real court case involving Shakespeare’s daughter, and A Russian in the Woods (2001), set in post-war Berlin. His play The School of Night (1992) explores the world of Elizabethan playwrights and the mysterious group known as the School of Night.
Whelan’s association with the Royal Shakespeare Company was a defining aspect of his career, with several of his plays premiering at the RSC and receiving critical attention for their historical depth and characterisation. His work has been produced in the UK and internationally.
