Oliver Goldsmith was an Anglo-Irish writer, poet, and physician, known for his contributions to literature in the eighteenth century. He was born in Ireland and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. After completing his studies, Goldsmith travelled in Europe before settling in London, where he pursued a career as a writer.
Goldsmith wrote across several genres, including poetry, drama, and prose. His notable works include the novel The Vicar of Wakefield, published in 1766, which tells the story of a country vicar and his family. He is also the author of the pastoral poem The Deserted Village, published in 1770, which reflects on rural life and social change.
In addition to his novels and poetry, Goldsmith wrote plays. His best-known play, She Stoops to Conquer, was first performed in 1773 and is recognised for its comedic elements and social commentary. Goldsmith also produced essays and contributed to periodicals of his time.
Goldsmith was associated with literary figures such as Samuel Johnson and was a member of The Club, a London dining society. His works have been noted for their wit, clarity, and insight into human nature.
One of Goldsmith’s significant milestones was the first performance of She Stoops to Conquer in 1773.
