Nick Newman biography

Nick Newman (born 17 July 1958) is a British satirical cartoonist and comedy writer. He began selling cartoons in the late 1970s, joined Private Eye in 1981, and has been pocket cartoonist for The Sunday Times since 1989. His drawings have also appeared in titles such as Punch and The Spectator.

A long-time collaborator with Ian Hislop, Newman has co-written television, radio, film, and stage works. Their credits include the BBC One sitcom My Dad’s the Prime Minister (2003–2004) and the feature film A Bunch of Amateurs (2008). As playwrights, they adapted their BBC drama about the First World War trench newspaper into the stage play The Wipers Times.

Newman’s theatre work is widely performed. The Wipers Times premiered at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury, on 22 September 2016 before touring and transferring to London’s West End. Hislop and Newman also created the stage comedy A Bunch of Amateurs, which is licensed for performance by Concord Theatricals.

Newman has received multiple industry awards, including Cartoon Art Trust honours for pocket and gag cartoons and Sports Journalists’ Association cartoonist awards. A specific milestone in his writing career is the West End transfer of The Wipers Times in March 2017.
