Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist and short story writer, born in Salem, Massachusetts. He is widely recognised for his works exploring themes of morality, sin, and the complexities of human nature, often set against the backdrop of Puritan New England. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College, graduating in 1825, where he formed friendships with future prominent figures such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Franklin Pierce.
Hawthorne’s early career included the publication of short stories in various periodicals, many of which were later collected in Twice-Told Tales (1837). His writing is noted for its use of allegory and symbolism, and he often drew upon the history and atmosphere of his native New England. In 1846, he published Mosses from an Old Manse, another collection of short stories.
Hawthorne’s most famous novel, The Scarlet Letter, was published in 1850 by Ticknor, Reed & Fields. The novel is set in 17th-century Puritan Massachusetts and examines issues of legalism, guilt, and redemption. This work established Hawthorne’s reputation as a major American writer. He followed this with other significant novels, including The House of the Seven Gables (1851), The Blithedale Romance (1852), and The Marble Faun (1860).
In addition to his fiction, Hawthorne held various government positions, including a post at the Salem Custom House and later as United States consul in Liverpool, England, from 1853 to 1857. His experiences abroad influenced his later writings.
Hawthorne’s works have remained influential in American literature, studied for their psychological depth and historical context. The Scarlet Letter (1850) continues to be widely read and analysed in educational settings.
