Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Monika Singh Gangotra is a children’s book author of South Asian heritage, known for writing on themes such as identity and colourism. Sunflower Sisters (Owlet Press, 2021) was one of her early picture books, later followed by The Gifts That Grow: A Sunflower Sisters Story (Owlet Press, 2022).
She holds a PhD in psychology, completed in 2015. She grew up in New South Wales, Australia, in a family of Indian origin, and later relocated to Birmingham, UK.
Gangotra is a trained psychologist whose academic interests include identity. Her author profile describes her focus on authentic representation, diversity and telling stories that reflect her heritage.
Sunflower Sisters won the Northern Lights Book Awards (Picture Book – All Ages) in 2022.
