Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Moira Buffini is a British playwright and screenwriter known for her work in theatre, film, and television. She studied English and Drama at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and later trained as an actor at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
Buffini’s early plays include Jordan (1992), co-written with Anna Reynolds, which won the Writers’ Guild Award for Best Fringe Play. Her subsequent works for the stage include Gabriel (1997), Silence (1999), and Loveplay (2001). Silence was produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 1998.
Her play Dinner premiered at the National Theatre in 2002 and was later revived in the West End. Buffini’s adaptation of Jane Eyre for the stage was first performed at the Shared Experience Theatre Company in 1997. She is also known for Welcome to Thebes (2010), which was staged at the National Theatre.
In addition to her theatre work, Buffini has written for film and television. She wrote the screenplay for the 2011 film adaptation of Jane Eyre, directed by Cary Fukunaga. Buffini also wrote the screenplay for Tamara Drewe (2010), directed by Stephen Frears, based on the graphic novel by Posy Simmonds.
Buffini is a founding member of the Monsterists, a group of playwrights advocating for large-scale new plays. Her television work includes co-creating and writing for the BBC series Harlots, which first aired in 2017.
In 2018, Buffini’s play Dinomania was produced by the National Theatre Connections programme.
