Mohsin Hamid is a British Pakistani author known for his novels exploring themes of identity, migration, and globalisation. He was born in Lahore, Pakistan, and spent parts of his childhood in both Pakistan and the United States. Hamid studied at Princeton University and later earned a degree from Harvard Law School.
Hamid’s debut novel, Moth Smoke, was published in 2000 by Granta Books. The novel was shortlisted for the 2000 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (Eurasia Region, Best First Book). His second novel, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, was published in 2007 by Hamish Hamilton. This work was shortlisted for the 2007 Man Booker Prize and has been widely studied in schools and universities.
In 2013, Hamid published How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia with Hamish Hamilton. The novel employs a second-person narrative and is structured as a parody of self-help books. His fourth novel, Exit West, was published in 2017 by Hamish Hamilton. Exit West was shortlisted for the 2017 Man Booker Prize and the 2017 International Dublin Literary Award.
Hamid’s essays and short stories have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Guardian, and The New Yorker. He has also written a collection of essays, Discontent and Its Civilizations, published in 2014 by Hamish Hamilton.
In 2022, Hamid published his fifth novel, The Last White Man, with Hamish Hamilton.
