Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Mei Matsuoka is a Japanese-English author and illustrator known for her work in children’s literature. Born in Tokyo, she moved to England at a young age and later studied at the University of Brighton, where she graduated with a degree in Illustration.
Matsuoka’s debut picture book, Ten-san, Kame-san and Muri-san Go on a Journey, was published in 2004. She is particularly recognised for her book Footprints in the Snow, which was published by Andersen Press in 2007. This title was shortlisted for the Booktrust Early Years Award and the Red House Children’s Book Award. Her illustrations are noted for their distinctive style, combining influences from both Japanese and British cultures.
In addition to her own writing, Matsuoka has illustrated books for other authors, including Hannibalsaurus Rex by Francesca Simon and Hedgehogs Don’t Live in the City! by Lucy Reynolds and Jenna Herman. Her work has been featured in exhibitions and she has participated in events promoting children’s literature and illustration.
Mei Matsuoka’s book Footprints in the Snow was shortlisted for the Booktrust Early Years Award in 2007.
