Megumi Iwasa biography

Megumi Iwasa is a Japanese author known for her children’s books. She studied at Waseda University in Tokyo. Iwasa’s writing often explores themes of friendship and communication, and her stories are characterised by gentle humour and thoughtful observations.

Her debut book, Yoroshiku, Gokko, was published in Japan in 2001. Iwasa is best known internationally for her book Yours Sincerely, Giraffe, which was first published in English by Gecko Press in 2016, translated by Cathy Hirano. The story follows a giraffe and a penguin who become pen pals, and it has been recognised for its unique approach to storytelling and illustration. The book features illustrations by Jun Takabatake.

Following the success of Yours Sincerely, Giraffe, Iwasa continued the series with Dear Professor Whale and Giraffe and the Bird, both also illustrated by Jun Takabatake and published by Gecko Press. Her works have been published in several languages and are noted for their appeal to young readers and their use in educational settings.

In 2018, Yours Sincerely, Giraffe was included in the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) Honour List.
