Maureen Johnson is an American author known for her work in young adult fiction. She studied writing and theatrical dramaturgy at Columbia University. Johnson’s debut novel, The Key to the Golden Firebird, was published by HarperCollins in 2004. She has since written several standalone novels and series, including the Suite Scarlett series and the Shades of London series, which began with The Name of the Star in 2011.
Johnson contributed to the Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances anthology alongside John Green and Lauren Myracle, published in 2008 by Speak. She also wrote for the 13 Little Blue Envelopes duology, with the first book released in 2005 and its sequel, The Last Little Blue Envelope, in 2011.
Her novel Truly Devious was published by Katherine Tegen Books in 2018, launching a mystery series set at Ellingham Academy. The series includes The Vanishing Stair (2019), The Hand on the Wall (2020), The Box in the Woods (2021), and Nine Liars (2022).
Johnson’s books have appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list. She served as a 2012–2013 board member for the Authors Guild. In 2014, she received the American Library Association’s Margaret A. Edwards Award for significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature.
