Maureen Bakis biography

Maureen Bakis is an educator and author whose work focuses on teaching graphic novels in secondary English classrooms. She is the author of The Graphic Novel Classroom: POWerful Teaching and Learning with Images, a practical guide for middle and high school teachers on using graphic novels to teach reading, writing, critical thinking and problem-solving.

The Graphic Novel Classroom includes teaching and learning models, detailed lesson units linked to specific texts, examples of student work, resources, references and an index. Its chapters cover the comics medium, visual interpretation, memoir, superheroes and classroom work with texts including Shaun Tan’s The Arrival, Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese, Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta.

Bakis has presented her classroom experience with graphic novels at educational conferences and events including New York Comic Con, Harvard University and Columbia University’s Teachers College. She has contributed to Graphic Novel Reporter and Diamond Bookshelf, and she has developed graphic novel instructional resources for Reading with Pictures.

The Graphic Novel Classroom: POWerful Teaching and Learning with Images was published by SAGE Publications on 7 November 2011 in a 176-page ebook edition, and a Skyhorse ebook edition with a foreword by James Bucky Carter was published on 5 August 2014.
