Margaret Atwood is a Canadian author, poet, and literary critic known for her extensive body of work spanning fiction, poetry, and essays. She studied at the University of Toronto and later completed her master’s degree at Radcliffe College, Harvard University. Atwood’s writing often explores themes of gender, identity, power, and the environment.
Her first collection of poetry, Double Persephone, was published in 1961. She gained wider recognition with her novel The Edible Woman in 1969. Atwood has written numerous novels, including Surfacing (1972), Life Before Man (1979), Bodily Harm (1981), and Cat’s Eye (1988). Her 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale is one of her most widely studied works and has been adapted for stage and screen.
In addition to fiction, Atwood has published several poetry collections, such as Power Politics (1971) and Morning in the Burned House (1995). She has also written short stories, children’s books, and critical essays. Atwood’s speculative fiction includes the MaddAddam Trilogy: Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013).
Atwood has received numerous literary awards and honours. She was awarded the Booker Prize in 2000 for The Blind Assassin and was joint winner of the Booker Prize in 2019 for The Testaments. Her work has been translated into multiple languages and is widely included in academic curricula.
