Mamoru Hosoda is a Japanese filmmaker, animator and author known for original feature films that blend intimate family stories with speculative ideas. After studying at the Kanazawa College of Art he joined Toei Animation, directing shorts for the Digimon Adventure franchise and the feature One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island.
Working with Madhouse he directed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) and Summer Wars (2009). He subsequently founded Studio Chizu during the production of Wolf Children (2012), establishing a long-term home for his projects including The Boy and the Beast (2015), Mirai (2018) and Belle (2021).
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time won Animation of the Year at the Japan Academy Prize in 2007, and Mirai was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019.
