Malika Booker biography

Malika Booker is a British writer and poet known for her work in poetry, theatre, and interdisciplinary art. She is the founder of Malika’s Poetry Kitchen, a collective that supports and develops poets in the UK. Booker’s poetry often explores themes of family, history, and cultural identity, drawing on her Guyanese and Grenadian heritage.

Her debut poetry collection, Pepper Seed, was published by Peepal Tree Press in 2013. The collection was shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Centre Prize for First Full Collection in 2014. Booker’s poems have also appeared in anthologies and literary journals, including The Penguin Modern Poets series.

In addition to her published poetry, Booker has written for theatre and radio. She has worked with organisations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the BBC. Booker has also held residencies and delivered workshops at various institutions, supporting the development of new writers and poets.

In 2020, Malika Booker won the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem for her poem “The Little Miracles.”
