Lynne Cherry is an American author and illustrator known for her work in children’s literature, particularly books that focus on environmental themes. She studied at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and later received a Master of Arts from Yale University.
Cherry has written and illustrated numerous books for children, often highlighting the importance of nature and conservation. One of her most recognised works is The Great Kapok Tree, first published in 1990 by Harcourt. This book uses the setting of a rainforest to introduce young readers to the concept of environmental stewardship and the interconnectedness of living things. The story has been widely used in educational settings to support discussions about ecology and the environment.
In addition to The Great Kapok Tree, Cherry has both written and illustrated other titles such as A River Ran Wild and Flute’s Journey: The Life of a Wood Thrush. Her books often combine detailed illustrations with factual information, aiming to engage children with the natural world and encourage curiosity about environmental issues.
Cherry’s work has been recognised with several awards and honours. According to her official website, The Great Kapok Tree was named an American Library Association Notable Book in 1990.
